Hi.

I’m a fan of Manhattan Art, Beauty, Fashion and Lifestyle! The best way to experience New York City that I've found is by word of mouth. Great ideas and inspiration often come from other people's thoughts and experiences.

Artist Talks: From Digital to Fine Art with Grey Coutts

Artist Talks: From Digital to Fine Art with Grey Coutts

Artist Grey Coutts has worked in the digital art space for years, after studying it in college and then going into a career in graphic design. Lately, however the artist is discovering his long-held passion for fine art and the abstract. Coutts talked to us about his work and his love of Manhattan as it relates to his work.

When did you first discover your talent and interest in art?

Abstract art used to be a dream of mine. I remember the moment, staring at art on the wall, and thinking, “I want to do that.” I really discovered an interest in high school.  I was offered a certificate for the National Art Honor Society in ninth grade, which I foolishly denied because I was too nervous. I slowly got into more digital art. With the help of an encouraging teacher, I decided to make it my path. During college I truly discovered that I was more than a graphic Design Student, a full-blown expressive Fine Artist.

Your artwork is so bold and vivid. Something that I think we can all appreciate in today's world. Yes, I love using color. My art and color directly correlate to energy.

What do you most want people to see when they look at your art?

I want my work to evoke emotion. Sometimes when I post on Instagram (@greycoutts) and I ask my audience - “What does this piece make you feel?”  I love to see what emotions the piece evokes. It’s even cooler when it matches mine.

What do you think of Manhattan in regards to artists and inspiration?

There is just so much going on in Manhattan it's hard to take it all in. Personally, for my own art, being in the city and experiencing the vast variety of individuals is an inspiration on its own. I truly feel anybody can visit and be inspired--even if it's unconsciously. My work is all about energy, so being around that much hype and variety gives me endless inspiration. Everything from the subway to the street performers, plus all the publicity stunts being done by people and brands. It's a lot!

Do you have any favorite New York spots?

I love the Lower East Side. Thearea is full of cool street art, bars and I love the overall vibe of the area. I also love Alphabet City and Queens. MOMA PS1 is always inspirational.
