Launch Event: New York City Code COLLECTOR
New York City being the small town that it is, I recently bumped into a friend at a hotel downtown and was introduced to COLLECTOR, a Geneve Swiss luxury handcrafted handbag designer. COLLECTOR is known for producing small limited collections using only the highest quality exotic skins and accessories. It was a beautiful collection, indeed.
But what makes COLLECTOR a collectible?
What made this COLLECTOR collection truly interesting and worthy of our attention, in my opinion, was that it was curated by Bill Claps, a notable New York based visual artist, filmmaker and writer. Claps' is a serious artist whose work comments on art history and language. His recent mixed media works utilize Morse code to communicate various ideas and thoughts.
"In an age where all our art and communication can be reduced to and stored in a binary language, the fact that Morse code was one of the earliest forms of digital code and the first universal language of the digital age resonates strongly with me." ~ Bill Claps
A student of art from Harvard University, Claps is a contributing writer to Artspace Magazine and Exibart Magazine. His paintings, drawing and installations have been featured in solo and group exhibitions in galleries, institutions and art fairs throughout the US and Europe.
Utilizing photos and prints of his drawings in his works, and relying on text and symbolic representation to present his ideas, Claps's art is not only visually captivating but thought provoking. The handbags incorporate Clap's art, combining with the signature craftsmanship of the COLLECTOR brand. The result: I wouldn't be surprised to find one of these bags on the auction block at Sotheby's one day!
A good artist and design deserves a good word in support. And so, I invite you to discovery more about this work at YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WipomcRy_6I. Enjoy!
